... not to steal the thunder from a friend who had spotted a great field of sunflowers on a nearby farm. I'll let Alan showcase his image(s) for our Sunday morning shoot while I delve back into images from last week's outing for something.

Rattlesnake Lookout

The vantage points on the Niagara Escarpment provide great opportunity for scenic landscape shots. This one is taken from one of the lookout points at Rattlesnake Point near Milton, ON, where I stopped after my trek around Crawford Lake last weekend. After not cooperating completely while I was at Crawford, clouds formed in the sky to provide enough structure for this image.

Crawford Lake IR

The urge to create some Infrared (IR) images after experimenting with an inexpensive 720 nm filter has caught up with me. IR images have a surreal quality that enhances the visual impact. I have chosen to convert to a B&W IR version of the image here.

Exposures on my digital camera bodies have require approximately +12.5 stops and the resulting long shutter speeds require absolute camera stability. This weekend I had the opportunity to try out a friend's tripod and ball head for added stability for my 7D body with battery grip and 24-105 f4 L lens. Technique and equipment can be put to the test when making exposures in the 30 second range. I'll be looking to replace my current tripod and head soon.

water's edge
I am drawn to reflections. Those who go out shooting with me know that I will almost always stop when I see a reflection. I like to use an element of the reflection and an element of the "real" scene to create an image that causes the viewer to look closer. I like to create images that play with the mind, some more, some less.

Some perhaps a little Escher ...
... some a little Dali ... some simple reflections.

This one, just a tranquil scene at ... water's edge.

Photo of the Week 2010-07-05

On our way out to shoot this Saturday a friend and I ran into another local photography enthusiast at Tim Horton's. We stopped to chat for a while and he told us of a location with an old iron bridge that crossed the Grand River just west of Elora. We thought it sounded like the place had some potential so we decided to check out.

The morning sun had risen well above the horizon and was providing some strong back-light on the trees bordering the river edge, the grassy meadow , the thick swarms of bugs over the river and the lone fly fisherman casting his line.

the cast

I now know the fisherman as Al. He and I chatted before I left to return home. We have since exchanged emails and I have provided him with a couple images from the shoot.
