A recent business trip would take me to Chatham, ON and I decided to head for the Lake Erie shore and make time for some photography before the evening light was gone.

Rose Beach Evening

I had been wanting to go to Erieau and photograph the aging wooden pilings along the shoreline with setting sun in the background. As I headed for my planned location, I detoured to follow the shore of Lake Erie as closely as possible from south of Ridgetown, ON. Turning along Rose Beach Line, the beach below the small bluff with waters reflecting the blue and cloud of the evening skies was enough to make me stop and get out for some shooting. The wind was cold and raw with the warmth from the sun rapidly disappearing. I nearly got back in the vehicle to pass on the location but decided to scramble down the bluff to make some images from beach level, and I'm glad I did.

The perspective from beach level with the waves forming lines along the shore and cloud lines running out into the lake made for some interesting patterns. I made several exposures and then spotted a beached log to compose in the foreground ... just what the scene needed. I made a few more images and scrambled back up the bluff to the warmth of my vehicle before heading over to Erieau.
Images from that location to follow ... maybe.

across spring fields

I was out for a drive this weekend in search of something ... a sign that winter is gone? ... a break from the stress o the day-job? ... a distraction? ... something.

The morning was overcast and sun had risen behind a curtain of thick grey cloud. Lighting was flat and dull, the wind carried a bitter chill. The morning was not looking promising, but eventually the clouds started to break up and we stopped beside the road to see if a patch of sunlight would reach the adjacent field or the distant farm. No such dramatic light for me to capture on this day, but a subtle, diffused glow began to warm the corn stalk stubble of this spring field.

Against the cold grey sky, the contour of the fields were mirrored in the clouds.

long winter lane

Just another week until the official arrival of Spring ... and scenes like this will be gone for another year. I couldn't resist stopping on my way to work last Friday when I passed a familiar spot. The entrance to this property has always intrigued me, with it's long tree & shrub lined lane.

I processed the image in Adobe LR3 and later CS5 to create the surreal effect, some have described as "painterly". I have used it before and I think with good results. In this case ti imparts a "wonderland" feel to the scene.

Here's to the arrival of Spring, but also, here's to the winter past.

... almost done.

I had a portrait session with Murphy recently to try work on my studio shooing some more. He was a cooperative subject for quite a while. Lynn helped me by wrangling him onto the backdrop and keeping him interested.

Murphy is quite responsive to my direction as far as sitting and lying down but it's quite different working with a subject that has no interest in being photographed what so ever. I managed to make several decent images and even managed to get the more traditional image below.

... the best by far in my opinion, is the one opening this blog entry, a more candid shot as the session was ending where the expression says it all.
